In the age of digital transactions, writing a check may seem outdated. However, there are still occasions when you might need to write a check, such as for a down payment on a house or a monthly rent payment. Writing a check is straightforward once you understand the process. Here, O1ne Mortgage offers a step-by-step guide on how to write a check.
Once you know what appears on a check, writing one is simple. Follow these seven steps:
In the upper right-hand corner, jot down the date. Write out the month, followed by the day and year. For example, August 1, 2023.
Below and to the left of the date line, you’ll see “Pay to the order of.” Write the name of the person or organization you’re paying.
To the right of the “Pay to the order of” line is a box with a dollar sign. Enter the amount in dollars and cents. For example, 1,000.00.
Below the “Pay to the order of” line, spell out the dollar amount. For example, “One hundred twenty-six dollars and 50/100 cents.”
In the lower left-hand corner, use the memo line to describe the purpose of the check, such as “rent.”
In the bottom right-hand corner, sign your name. Ensure your signature matches the name printed on the check.
Record the check details in your checkbook register to keep track of transactions.
While checks are generally secure, follow these practices to ensure your check isn’t misused:
You can cash or deposit a check at your bank or credit union, the issuing financial institution, an ATM, or with a mobile app. You may also cash it at a store. Always endorse the back of the check before cashing or depositing it.
Consider these alternatives to writing a check:
While paper checks are becoming less common, it’s still useful to know how to write one. Whether you usually transact online or via debit card, you might encounter situations where a paper check is necessary.
